At Step Up Academy’s summer STEM program, kids become engineers as they learn about engineering and how to think like an engineer. Kids in the summer camp, learn about the process engineers go through when developing new products and ideas. The children follow the 4 steps of engineering thinking: Ask, Imagine, Create, and Improve in various ways throughout the camp. This allows them to foster an engineering mindset with multiple opportunities to develop solutions and build a prototype to solve a specific problem. The kids have multiple opportunities to ask, imagine, create and improve various ideas – allowing them to become engineers. Students also engage in engineering in the various design challenges throughout the STEM camp and while developing their prototype to solve a real-world problem. Kids learn about the engineering mindset as a framework for their designs and their thinking. Through this model of thinking, kids learn problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, awareness of real-world problems and how to apply their knowledge and learning. The kids in the summer program love learning about engineering and being able to be an engineer as a kid. Through creating and problem solving, the children are empowered to create their own design to solve a problem while applying their learning to develop a prototype. STEM learning promotes interdisciplinary learning and application of learning. STEM learning is engaging and fun for kids! Kids really enjoy creating and designing solutions to problems. STEM education promotes engineering for kids and supports higher-order thinking. Kids love Step Up Academy’s STEM program and frequently note their enjoyment of the design challenges, problem solving and being an engineer.
