At Step Up Academy’s STEM summer program, kids enhance their mathematical thinking and mathematical applications through a variety of fun and engaging activities. The STEM program promotes math positively and helps to address any aversions or dislikes kids express towards math. Mathematical thinking is a way of thinking in order to solve problems using math. In the STEM program, kids engage with math in a variety of ways including topics such as logic, spatial sense, reasoning, and communication. The kids have opportunities to collaboratively solve logic puzzles which promotes their mathematical thinking, spatial sense, problem solving and collaboration in various ways, such as, solving a puzzle involving matching colours. In the STEM program, kids are provided the opportunity to engage in math through number talks which promote numeracy, math fluency and multiple strategies. First, the kids are presented with an ability-suited problem and they solve the problem independently. The children then share their strategies and methods for solving the problem in that way. Following this, the kids share their thinking and build their mathematical communication while also building their repertoire of strategies as they listen to how their peers solved the problem. These number talks promote mathematical understanding, consolidation of concepts, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and language development. Mathematical thinking is an important skill fostered in the Step Up STEM program which leads to many kids feeling more confident in math and an overall enjoyment for learning math as well!.
