At Step Up Academy’s summer STEM program for kids, children engage in hands on STEM learning throughout the summer camp and create their own STEM project solving a real-world problem. In the STEM program, the kids learn by doing and building physical solutions to problems. The kids solve challenges by building solutions with physical materials rather than simply learning about it. In the STEM program, many math concepts are also taught through a hands-on approach allowing the children to gain a strong understanding of the concepts and even more importantly, the ability to apply these concepts to other situations. STEM learning promotes independence and a variety of beneficial skills while engaging in fun and meaningful learning experiences. Kids love to use their hands to build, design and create and often do not realize they are learning because they are so engaged in the process. In our STEM program, the kids comment how much they love the various hands-on experiences within the program. Some common highlights are building and solving the design challenges and building their prototypes. The children have opportunities to build flight machines, conduct various experiments, as well as the freedom to move around a lot and learn by doing. The kids learn to take risks through the hands-on learning experiences in the STEM program and through these risks their learning is meaningful. With this freedom of movement also comes the development of skills such as self regulation and self-control. The many hands-on experiences in the Step Up STEM Camp are fun and engaging for the kids and they love them! They regularly talk about the various hands-on experiences and look forward to the next opportunity to learn.
